Virtual currency dealers on the FINTRAC registry
Businesses that deal in virtual currencies with people in Canada are money services businesses (MSBs) and must register with FINTRAC, the Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada. FINTRAC publishes its MSB registry as a spreadsheet covering every registration it has handled. The October 2026 export has 8,926 entries, of which 4,275 are currently registered; 2,659 of those list virtual currency dealing among their services.
Services declared alongside virtual currency
Registrants tick every MSB service they provide, and most virtual currency dealers declare several:
| Service | Registered VC dealers declaring it |
|---|---|
| Money transferring | 2,283 |
| Foreign exchange dealing | 2,245 |
| Payment service provider (PSP) | 1,809 |
| Virtual currency only | 188 |
Where they are incorporated
By business address, 1,016 registered virtual currency dealers are in Ontario, 932 in British Columbia, 192 in Alberta and 59 in Quebec, and about 400 give an address outside Canada. 194 are flagged as foreign MSBs, which register to serve people in Canada without a place of business here; examples include Coinbase, Inc. and BitGo Bank and Trust.
A register that grows fast
1,145 of the currently registered virtual currency dealers were first approved in 2026 and 713 in 2025, against a few hundred a year before that. The long-standing names, such as Netcoins (2015), Shakepay (2017), NDAX (2018) and Kraken's Canadian entity Payward Canada (2019), sit alongside a large number of recently incorporated companies, many of them in British Columbia and Ontario, whose activity is hard to judge from the register alone. Status matters: thousands of past registrations are now expired, ceased or revoked.
